Each
of
the
five
rhythms
is
interpreted
by
individuals
in
a
uniquely
personal
way,
opening
up
a
new
sense
of
freedom
and
possibilities.
This
is
surprising,
exhilarating,
and
restorative.
It
is,
in
essence,
an
exercise
for
the
right
brain.
The
movement
is
the
medicine,
the
meditation,
and
the
metaphor.
Together
we
peel
back
layers,
take
off masks, and dance till we disappear, only to rediscover ourselves through it all. 5Rhythms is flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness.
MOBILE APP
Flowing
We
physically
practice
the
art
of
being
fluid
in
our
bodies.
Flowing
is
the
impulse
to
follow
the
flow
of
one’s
energy,
to
be
true
to
oneself,
listen
and
attend
to
one’s needs, be receptive to one’s inner and outer world. When we open up to the flow of our physical beings, all other possibilities open.
Staccato
We
physically
practice
the
power
of
masculine
energy.
It
is
percussive
and
strong
and
promotes
connection
with
the
rest
of
the
world.
Staccato
is
the
gateway
to
the
heart.
It
shows
us
how
to
step
out
into
the
world
connected
to
our
feet
and
feelings.
It
is
the
part
of
us
that
stands
up
for
what
we
care
about
and
who
/ what we love.
Chaos
We
physically
practice
releasing
our
bodies.
We
let
go
of
the
head,
spine,
hips,
feet,
and
move
faster
than
we
can
think.
Chaos
breaks
us
free
from
our
illusions.
It
takes
us
on
a
journey
from
‘I
can’t’
to
‘I
will’.
The
simple
practices
of
Chaos
immediately
bring
us
back
to
our
bodies,
to
the
moment.
This
rhythm
liberates
us
from
all
ideas about who we are and gives us a real experience of being total, free, intuitive, and creative.
Lyrical
We
practice
how
to
break
out
of
destructive
patterns
and
surrender
to
the
depths
of
the
fluid,
creative
repetitions
of
our
soulful
selves.
Lyrical
is
expansive
and connects us to our humanity, timeless rhythms, repetitions, patterns, and cycles. Lyrical is more of a state of being than a rhythm.
Stillness
Being
still
and
doing
nothing
are
different.
Stillness
moves,
both
within
and
all
around
us.
The
dance
is
our
vehicle,
our
destination
is
the
Rhythm
of
Stillness;
our
challenge
is
to
be
a
vessel
that
keeps
moving
and
changing.
Each
time
we
dance
into
Stillness
we
practice
the
art
of
making
humble
and
mindful
endings.
This
carries
through
to
all
of
our
endings
in
life
-
the
end
of
this
dance,
this
day,
this
relationship,
or
this
life
cycle.
Good
endings
mean
taking
responsibility
for
the
whole
journey, distilling wisdom from our experience so that we may begin the next wave or cycle clean of carrying the past with us.

What happened?
Twenty
years
ago
I
took
part
in
my
first
5Rhythms®
weekend-workshop
in
the
Netherlands.
At
the
time
I
had
a
lot
of
pent-up
energy
and
the
dancefloor
was
a
great
place
to
get
this
energy
moving
and
expressed.
In
fact
I
danced
so
wildly
that
afterwards
I
couldn’t
sit
for
a
few
days
due
to
muscular
pain!
A
fantastic
experience.
The
dance,
the
music,
and
the
people.
I
started
dancing
on
a
weekly
basis.
The
more
I
did
it,
the
more
I
liked
it.
5Rhythms
is
about
freedom
and
structure
at
the
same
time.
It
needs
discipline
and
study.
The
considerable
energy
I
invested
in
this
mind
and
bodywork
brought
real
benefits
to
my
physical,
emotional,
and
mental
health.
Gabrielle
created
a
beautiful
map.
After
dancing
some
time
I
decided
to
take
a
workshop
with
her.
I
went
to
San
Francisco
for
a
weekend
workshop.
20,000km
to
dance
5Rhythms.
A
little
crazy?
Yes,
it
was.
And
I
was
hooked.
I
fell
in
love
with
the
practice
and
this
inspiring lady. Since then I committed myself to it, ups and downs included.
I
moved
to
London
for
one
year
of
practice.
I
danced
daily
with
many
teachers.
After
seven
years
of
practice
I
started
the
process
of
learning
to
teach
the
work.
Wow!
As
easy
as
it
might
seem,
the
real
difficulty
is
to
teach.
I
learned
very
much
over
the
years.
To
complete
my
understanding
of
psychology
and
the
body
I
started
to
train
in
Somatic
Experiencing®
-
technique
to
work
with
traumatized
people,
as
we
all
are,
more
or
less.
It
helped
me
to
guide
people
deeper
in
their
bodies
in
a
safe
and
healing
way.
Here
I
am. A full-time 5Rhythms teacher. A job I couldn’t have even imagined in my twenties. It is an ongoing learning process. As a teacher and as a student.
It is a privilege to share my experience and dance with you.

All or Nothing!
Gabrielle
Roth
was
an
inspiring
and
at
times
also
a
challenging
woman.
I
sometimes
heard
people
say:
“She
is
not
for
everyone.”
Some
people
were
afraid
of
her
because
she
was
unpredictable.
I
was
one
of
the
many
people
who
trusted
her
intention.
She
challenged
us
to
wake
up
and
bring
out
the
best
in
ourselves. Our true radiant nature. Are you ready for a challenging story about Gabrielle Roth's style?
We
were
together
with
150
people
in
Germany.
An
international
workshop
led
by
Gabrielle.
She
never
played
music
from
a
sound
installation,
but
was
always
with
'her'
drummers.
Dancing
to
live
music
with
such
a
large
group
is
a
great
experience.
But
not
always.
It
was
the
second
day
of
the
workshop
and
around
noon
we
had
a
break.
After
the
break
we
came
back
on
the
dance
floor
and
the
energy
and
inspiration
was
low.
The
lunch
break
is
the
time
to
take
a
nap
afterwards.
And
with
that
energy
we
started
to
dance.
Gabrielle
worked
hard
to
get
us
moving
again
and
she
did
that
by
inspiring
us
with
words.
It
was
without
result.
After
a
while
she
stopped
the
live
music
and
asked
everyone
to
come
together,
and
she
said,
“This
is
very
precious
time
we
have
together
here.
You
need
to
have
a
powerful
focus
to
awaken
your
soul.
It
takes
real
discipline
to
become
a
free
spirit.
So
you
have
two
options:
Change
your
attitude
and
dance
with
much
more
attention
and
discipline,
or
go
home.”
The
whole
room
was
in
shock,
because
she
was
serious!
As
far
as
I
know
nobody
chose
the
last
option
and
nobody
went
home.
But
everyone
was
aware
of
the
fact
that
we
were
not
here
to
swallow
something.
Imagine
what
effect
these
words
had
on
a
group
of
150
people.
The
dynamics
changed
completely,
and
we
danced
as
if
it
were
our
last
dance
here
on
earth.
Wild,
deep
and
full
of
surrender.
Gabrielle
took
the
dance
and
the
freedom
of
the
soul
completely
seriously.
And
she
did
that
with
a
lot
of
humor.
And
I
am eternally grateful for that. I started to love her and I still do. Thankfully I can develop my own style and keep the 5Rhythms alive with many colleagues around the world.
